Poppies are one of the most brilliant herbaceous perennials to bloom in the early summer. The color of the oriental poppy comes in rich shades of rose, pink, plum, salmon and white in addition to the original vibrant orange and red.The flowers are like crepe paper stuffed inside spiky poppy buds. When the flower first breaks free of the husks of the bud, it is so wrinkled from being encased full-size. The flower also has the fragile look of fine crushed silk taffeta.
