Job Description and Expectations

Mission:

Arlington Community Media, Inc. (“ACMI”) is a nonprofit, membership-based organization dedicated to providing an electronic forum for the free exchange of information and ideas which reflect the talents, skills, interests, concerns and diversity of the Arlington community. In pursuit of this mission, ACMI:

  • Manages facilities for community access TV programming on the Public, Educational, and Governmental (PEG) access channels on the Arlington Cable telecommunications systems
  • Provides access to, and training in, telecommunications technology, including video, audio, and other media production, and computer communications
  • Serves as a catalyst to facilitate and stimulate community discourse and provide leadership in the uses of telecommunications technology


Purpose

  • To advise, govern, oversee policy and direction, and assist with the leadership and general promotion of Arlington Community Media, Inc. in support of the organization’s mission and needs.


Major Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Consistent attendance at regular monthly Board meetings
  • Preparation for regular board meetings by reading in advance and studying materials sent in advance regarding key actions the Board is expected to take at its next regular meeting
  • Serve in specific assignments to carry out the mission of the organization
  • Formulation and oversight of policies and procedures
  • Financial management, including adoption and oversight of the annual budget and approval of major actions of the organization, including capital expenditures and program and service changes
  • Exercise short and long-term organizational planning
  • Provide strategic direction to the Executive Director
  • Evaluate performance, development and compensation of the Executive Director
  • Review and evaluate organizational and programmatic reports
  • Provide candid and constructive criticism, advice, and comments
  • Engage in the review of the Board’s performance annually


Experience Preferred:

  • Membership on a non-profit or for-profit board of directors
  • Background or substantive knowledge of cable industry either from a management or production perspective
  • Proven skills in accounting, finance or marketing

Production Intern – News (3 months, preferably 12-15 hrs/wk over 2-3 days)

This is a hands-on position in which you will be directly involved in producing cable and web content right from the start. After initial training in all aspects of television production – including camera operation, audio, lighting, editing, reporting, writing, and more – you will produce your own news packages, assist as needed on other productions, and collaborate with ACMi members and local organizations to produce further content. Your specific responsibilities will include online research, communicating with potential interview subjects, and executing both field and in-studio shoots. Interns will be directly supervised by the News Director or Assistant News Director, and ACMi staff will be generally available as needed to provide support and consultation. At the end of your term, you will leave with a full reel of the various productions you contributed to, including what specific role(s) you took on in each of them.

Production Intern – Sports (3 months, preferably 12-15 hrs/wk over 2-3 days)

This is a hands-on position in which you will be directly involved in producing cable and web content right from the start. After initial training in all aspects of television production – including camera operation, audio, lighting, editing, and field shooting – you will collaborate with peers and ACMi members to produce sports content, including game coverage, studio shows, and digests. Your specific responsibilities will include communicating with potential interview subjects, and executing both multi-camera field shoots and in-studio shoots. We are looking for interns who are comfortable with technology, can transition smoothly between different tasks, and have solid communication and time-management skills. Interns will be directly supervised by ACMi’s Youth Coordinator and/or Studio Manager, and the rest of the staff will be generally available as needed to provide support and consultation. At the end of your term, you will leave with a full reel of the various productions you contributed to, including what specific role(s) you took on in each of them.

Production Intern – Public Affairs (3 months, preferably 12-15 hrs/wk)

This is a hands-on position in which you will be directly involved in producing cable and web content right from the start. After initial training in all aspects of television production – including camera operation, audio, lighting, editing, reporting, writing, and more – you will assist in Public Affairs productions and collaborate with ACMi members and local organizations to produce further content. Your specific responsibilities will include online research, communicating with potential interview subjects, and executing both field and in-studio shoots. We are looking for interns who are comfortable with technology, can transition smoothly between different tasks, and have solid communication and time-management skills. Interns will be directly supervised by ACMi’s Public Affairs Producer, and other staff will be generally available as needed to provide support and consultation. At the end of your term, you will leave with a full reel of the various productions you contributed to, including what specific role(s) you took on in each of them.

General Production Intern (3 months, preferably 12-15 hrs/wk over 2-3 days)

This is a hands-on position in which you will be directly involved in producing cable and web content right from the start. After initial training in all aspects of television production – including preproduction planning, camera operation, audio, lighting, editing, and more – you will be encouraged to produce your own programming, assist as needed on other productions, and collaborate with ACMi members and local organizations to produce further content. Your specific responsibilities will include communicating with member-producers and potential interview subjects, partnering with a local organization or non-profit to produce relevant programming, and executing both multi-camera field shoots and in-studio shoots. Interns will be directly supervised by ACMi’s Production Manager, and the rest of the staff will be generally available as needed for support and consultation. At the end of your term, you will leave with a full reel of the various productions you contributed to, including what specific role(s) you took on in each of them.
