In September a team of high-schoolers calling themselves Focus Media Productions participated in the Just-A-Minute Film Festival. For several of the members the experience produced their first digital media production. The team created several digital video shorts and garnered first-place awards for two of them: “Dancing Mike” (http://justaminute.tv/159) and “Getting Out of Car” (http://justaminute.tv/160).

After the videos were created and submitted to the festival, the team stayed together to create and produce its own show for ACMI. Humorama is primarily a sketch comedy and improvisation show and can be seen on ACMI’s education channel (Comcast 9, RCN 13, and Verizon 24). Check the current schedule (http://acmi.tv/programming/schedule/) for show times — but we digress.

Back to our story
After several months of creating their own programming, the Humorama gang got the call announcing that two of their entries (one by Lucas Delbanco and one by Mike Morrissette were winners in the international Just-A-Minute Film Festival (http://www.justaminute.tv/). Humorama took home $200 in prize money awarded publicly via an oversized check by the Festival’s founder himself, Don Daniels. The young producers were thrilled by the news and the notoriety.

ACMi Youth Coordinator and Focus Media mentor Dan Black opined, “Comedy doesn’t often get the credit it deserves, especially when it’s kids creating and performing the skits and shooting the video.” ACMi wishes this team of young writers, producers, and actors the best of luck going forward and is honored to provide the equipment, facilities, and training to hone their newly acquired skills. Maybe someday we’ll see them on Saturday Night Live and watch their names scroll in the credits: Michael Morrissette, Brendan O’Rourke, Noel Forte, Adrian Nouvellon – Pugh, and Lucas Delbanco.
