National Flood Insurance Program Fleshed Out

Among the more dramatic effects of climate change are the increasing frequency and severity of flood events, and much attention has been brought to the plight of those who have struggled to repair their homes because they lacked adequate flood insurance to do so. This, it turns out, is not a faraway problem. Arlington, Belmont, and Cambridge share a flood plain in the Alewife area, and for that reason a Stormwater Flooding Group from all three towns has been meeting regularly to make plans and provide information for the likely eventuality of our own flood event. The latest in this series features a presentation about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) given by Joy Duperault, the director of the DCR Flood Hazard Management Program. She covers everything from the basics of the program through the resources available to all local officials and residents, and anyone who might be affected by such an event will want to tune in It’s on our Government channel.
