On Any Given Sunday

Previously we introduced you to a New England legend in the arena of sports. We spoke with the former general manager of the New England Patriots Upton Bell who resides near the Arlington/Cambridge line.

Upton’s father Bert was the commissioner of the national football league for 13 years in the ’40’s and ’50’s just as television was catching on to this rough and tumble sport.

Bert Bell was a legendary task-master and his go-to gadget of communication was made from bake-light, wires, a rotary dial and, if you were occasionally on the wrong end of the line, a receiver.

In our continuing series “On Any Given Sunday,” Upton tells ACMi’s news director Jeff Barnd there was never a phone Bert Bell didn’t like.
