Wide Angle: Episode 45 – Gross National Happiness: On Measuring Things More Important Than Money

“Happiness,” said Aristotle, “is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” The notion even made the final edit in one of this country’s founding documents, the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” wrote Jefferson, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
But do we ever measure our happiness? And if we did—troubled as we are by underfunded schools, a widening wealth gap, and political division, for starters—what would be revealed?
