Celebrating the Legacy of Arlington’s Internationally Acclaimed Composer, Alan Hovhaness

Arlington Community Media (ACMi) welcomed Alan Jones and his guests, William, the stepson of Alan Hovhaness, and Colleen Host, to take us back to the past as they reflect on their time spent with Alan and his wife Hinako Hovhaness. Along with William and Colleen, Jones also invited several guests who were able to meet Alan, as well as those who were greatly influenced by his work. 

Alan was an American composer born in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1911. He has over 500 pieces, making him one of the most profuse composers of the 20th century.  As people share their stories of meeting him, his ability to understand culture and personality in different music, connect with others through music, the lasting impression he made on many, his caring demeanor, and his music playing a major part in bringing other people together. 

This interview with Alan Jones commemorates Alan Hovhaness’ life, from his personal life with his family to the various stories that touched many lives wherever he traveled. 

Experience the effect of Alan Hovanhess as each guest shares their stories with such passion and admiration for the composer. His music reached countless hearts, and conversations with him left many eager to be in his presence and experience his inspiring work and knowledge. 

Today, his family continues to work towards sharing his music with the public through The Hovhaness-Fujihara Music Company, aiming to spread  Alan Hovhaness’ music without turning a profit.
