The Battle of Menotomy


Did you know that on day one of the Revolutionary War the battle that saw the most casualties was right here in town? It’s the largest battle in terms of bloodshed and it was arguably the most brutal firefight on April 19, 1775.

Now, all that remains of that ferocious campaign are four colossal rocks atop a fork in the road in Arlington Heights: “The Foot of the Rocks.” In this latest edition of Arlington Making History, we talk to a pair of local historians who explain why the Battle of Menotomy is among the greatest military campaigns in America’s War of Independence. But by some strange quirk of history, it’s among the least known.
