In the 190 years leading up to Britain’s departure from India in 1947, the per capita income of average Indians had not grown, while the literacy rate was just 18%. Since independence, modern education and jobs have still not reached most Indians.
Almost bankrupt, India was in 1990 forced to open its borders and economy. As a result, the country began prospering as millions entered the global workforce. One of them was Ashok Deshmane. But rather than enrich himself alone, he decided to leave his high-paying job to start a non-profit, Snehawan, aimed at educating the children of poor farmers.
We talked with Ashok to learn more about his inspiration, his work and his vision of the future.
